The fulfillment of the national demand for beef is only about 58%. As a result, the government imports feeder cattle and frozen meat. This condition can worsen local farmers because some areas have the potential to be developed as beef cattle clusters to increase the cattle population. One of them is the beef cattle cluster in Senggreng Village, Malang Regency.
Reading this opportunity, the Research Group Red Meat Producers (RG RMP) of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) formed a beef cattle cluster in the Wijikamulyan livestock group in Senggreng Village in 2020-2021. According to the head of RG RMP, Prof. Trinil Susilawati, the long-term solution to overcome the problem of beef supply is through strengthening beef cattle breeding, by forming a beef cattle cluster in a potential area.
Assistance activities have been taking place since 2020 in collaboration with Bank Indonesia Malang Region. The initial focus was to increase beef cattle breeds by performing artificial insemination (AI) to increase productivity and supply of feeders. In 2021, increase the success of AI, group strengthening, and feed independence.
In addition, the RG team provides additional training for the wives of breeders on fish processing technology to increase the shelf life and promotion of products online and offline considering the location of Senggreng Village is close to the Sutami dam which can be used in fisheries and tourism businesses. In addition, training and demonstrations on creative economic development such as earthworm cultivation were carried out.
After receiving the pieces of training, active breeders who participated in all series of activities were graduated by the Dean of Fapet UB accompanied by representatives of Bank Indonesia Malang, Wednesday (17/11/2021). The graduation ceremony was held offline in the Auditorium Room, 8th floor of Fapet UB, which was attended by 23 graduates, Suyanto (Head of Senggreng Village), Sayidah Zakiah, S.Pt. (Head of Breeding and Animal Health Department of Malang Regency), and Cicilia Melly (Deputy of Bank Indonesia Malang Representative Office).
“We appreciate the efforts of the team from Fapet UB who have fostered farmers in Senggreng Village. We hope that through this activity, we can make a Tough cattle group, and become a beef cattle cluster area or a source of beef cattle breeds,” explained Cicilia The
award was also given to those who have supported the facilitation program for the establishment of a beef cattle cluster in Malang Regency. Among others, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of Malang Regency, the Head of Senggreng Village, the Head of Kecopokan Hamlet, and the Inseminator of Senggreng Village. (dta)
