Increasing Cattle Population and Productivity Independently and Sustainably Indonesian Government Involves RG Red Meat Producers

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2021, domestic cow’s milk production is only able to meet the national needs of 22.74%. Meanwhile, beef imports in the same year were recorded at 211.43 thousand tons, which increased to 26.51% from 2020. The situation is getting worse with the endemic of mouth and nail disease (FMD) in 2022 which kills cattle in large numbers. 

In response to this, theIndonesian government has a plan to increase cattle population and productivity independently and sustainably. The design will be realized through the Directorate of Breeding and Livestock Production (Ditjen PKH) with Indonesia Australia Red Meat Cattle and partnership. However, the Australian government appointed the Red Meat Producers Research Group (RG RMP) to play a role in overcoming the problem of sexing cement production in Indonesia.

The Directorate General of PKH represented by Imron and Paul and Dara as representatives of Indonesia Australia Red Meat Cattle and Partnership visited the sexing team spermatozoa from RG RMP, Thursday (13/10/2022). The sexing consists of Prof. Trinil Susilawati, Dr. Kuswati, Rizki Prafitri, Ph.D., and Aulia Puspita Anugra yekti, M.Sc. 

The meeting agenda discussed the chronology of the discovery of the sexing method that had been produced by the Singosari Center for Artificial Insemination (BBIB). Such as testing the results of success at the laboratory level and its implementation in beef cattle and dairy cattle which began in 2017 until now. Then the next meeting will be held with BBIB Singosari, Center for Artificial Insemination (BIB) Lembang, a team from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) who discovered sexing technology in Lembang, and a sexing from Universitas Brawijaya (UB).

According to Imron, it is hoped that national and regional BIBs will be able to standardize sexing cement products in Indonesia, so that the nursery program can be carried out independently and sustainably.

RG RMP is one of the study groups in the Faculty of Animal Science (Fapet) UB. One of the innovations made by RG is to establish beef cattle clusters in Tuban (East Java) and Malang Regency. (TS/dta)
