A lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) conducted research on a group of livestock members of the Margo Mulyo dairy cooperative located in Bantur Village, Malang Regency. The research, which will be conducted in July-August 2023, is about the determination of a dairy farming business in the lowlands.

The team involved included Prof. Nurul Isnaini, Eko Nugroho, Ph.D., Aulia Puspita Anugra Yekti, M.Sc., Dr. Nanang Febrianto, and Tina Sri Purwanti, Ph.D. As well as collaborating with several students and field officers who assisted in data collection (enumerators). While the target is dairy farmers who are members of the Margo Mulyo Dairy Cooperative.

Enumerators conducted interviews with farmers using a questionnaire instrument. Digging deeper into the problems faced by farmers, the questions posed include the characteristics of the farmer’s household, the farmer’s motivation, the farmer’s livelihood (seen from the social capital, natural capital, financial capital, physical capital, and the farmer’s own capital). Then the team also collected information from the external factors of the farmers, such as the farmers’ perceptions of climate change and the adaptation strategies adopted by the farmers.

However, the team experienced problems in the data collection process, namely the time of the interview. The majority of breeders spend their time at night, because during the day they maximize their time for raising livestock. On the other hand, farmers’ understanding of questions in questionnaires and interviews is not easy to digest.

“We, the research team, thank the farmers and the Margo Mulyo Dairy Cooperative, we will examine the data we have obtained to find obstacles and solutions for the farmers here.” said Prof. Nurul

Some time ago this team conducted counseling to livestock groups members of the Margo Mulyo dairy cooperative regarding the process and factors that influence the results of artificial insemination (AI). (tim/dta)
