Students of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) celebrate Nusantara Milk Day (HSN) by holding an online seminar, Saturday (11/6/2022). The theme raised was the importance of consuming milk and the impact of nail-mouth disease (FMD) on milk productivity.
Invite speakers from academics and animal husbandry practitioners. Like Prof.Dr.Ir. Hendrawan Soetanto., M. Rur. Sc, Ph.D. (Fapet UB lecturer), drh. Widi Nugroho Ph. D. (FKH UB lecturer), Eva Marliyanti, SP, MM (President Director of Jabung Syariah Agro Niaga Cooperative), and Tino Nurhadiyanto (DDP Extension Manager of PT Frisian Flag Indonesia).
Prof. Hendrawan said, Indonesia is one of the countries with the lowest consumption of milk. So, a strategy for empowering milk consumption is needed by getting used to drinking milk from an early age, introducing a variety of useful dairy products, and education about age-appropriate limits for milk consumption.
“The composition of milk includes protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, and minerals that are needed to maintain the health of the human body. As well as providing balanced natural nutrition.” he explained
Meanwhile, drh. Widi said that the national milk production has recently decreased due to mouth and nail disease (FMD) that has infected cattle. However, milk from dairy cows affected by FMD is still safe for consumption by calves (calf) or humans if the boiling technique is used first.
“The risk of calves being infected with FMD from contaminated mothers is 30-50%. While the FMD virus will not infect humans who consume contaminated milk. Therefore it is necessary to inactivate the virus by boiling milk.” said Widi
Efforts to handle PMK cases were carried out by applying biosecurity as has been done in the Jabung area. As explained by Eva, this step is to prevent the spread of PMK transmission which is increasingly widespread. On the other hand, farmers need assistance to upgrade knowledge and equipment so that skills and housing management become better.
The HSN commemoration is set every June 1 based on the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No.2182/KPTS/PD.420/05/2009, as part of Indonesia’s participation in celebrating World Milk Day. (dta)
