The spread of foot and mouth disease (PMK) in cattle in Malang Raya has increased.), body weight loss, to a very drastic decrease in milk production in milk production centers in Malang Raya

calvesPMK education to farmers in Malang Raya. The task force team is a collaboration between the Faculty of Animal Science (FAPET) and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) as Chair of the PIC drh. Widi Nugroho, Ph.D with members Dr. Kuswati, Dr. Tri Eko Susilorini, Dr. Mashudi, drh. Viski Fitri Hendrawan, M. Vet, and drh. Sruti Listra Adrenaline.

Volunteer teams will be sent to locations affected by PMK. Described by drh. Widi Nugroho that the level of losses due to FMD due to decreased milk production so that milk does not come out, decreased body weight, calf mortality can reach 50%, kemajiran, loss of feeding due to high S/C, mastitis. The total loss can reach 5.48 million per lactating brood. Furthermore, it is said that prevention can be done by locking the farm, everyone is prohibited from entering except farmers with the obligation to wash their hands, use cage clothes, special boots for cages, withered forage, boiled drinking water/from safe wells/from PDAM and guests/butchers/ friends/neighbors are prohibited from entering.

“Currently the condition of our livestock is not doing well, therefore as livestock and animal health academics we will participate in tackling the prevention of the spread of FMD through education to farmers,” said Dr. Kuswati.

“The first step the team took was to collect data and information in areas affected by PMK. Then open registration for student volunteers from Fapet and FKH UB to provide education, assistance and socialization of PMK distribution to farmers.” he continued

. Meanwhile, dairy expert lecturer Dr. Tri Eko said that lactating cows did not produce milk for the last two months. This condition can cause inflammation of the udder called mastitis.

There are 80 registered volunteers who will be deployed to several areas, such as Jabung, Batu, and Ngantang. They will only educate farmers about preventing FMD transmission without visiting the cage directly.

Before starting the action, volunteers were provided with FMD prevention materials by drh. Widi, Tuesday (7/6/2022). According to him, prevention of the spread is done by applying biosecurity. Among them are cleaning the cage, drinking feed, and restricting cage traffic.

This means that only officers and interested parties can visit the cage. Before entering the cage, you are required to wash your hands and feet, and wear special clothes and boots. Meanwhile, livestock are given clean and hygienic food and drink, withered forage and vitamins.

“Then for the infected livestock, an isolation room is provided which is equipped with a foot bath or spraying area.” said Widi (dta)
