Practice on Maggot Cultivation in Kalimanis Village: Implementing Circular Economy for Food Security

As part of the 2024 Strategic Student Village Development Program (MMD) from Universitas Brawijaya, Kalimanis Village in Doko District, Blitar Regency hosted a training and practice session on maggot cultivation. This activity aims to implement the concept of a circular economy through the integration of agriculture and livestock to achieve food security in the village.

This event not only focused on maggot cultivation but also vermicomposting, with the goal of reducing environmental waste. Additionally, the training included sessions on the health management of sheep and goats, which are integral to the program.

The one-day training included both theoretical and practical sessions. The materials were presented by experts in their fields, namely Danung Nur Adli, M.Sc, Dr. drh. Rosita Indrati, and Humam Hafidz. They were accompanied by the field mentoring team of the MMD program, including Anie Eka Kusumastuti, M.Sc, Dr. Nanang Febrianto, and Puji Akhiroh, M.Sc.

A total of 27 participants, representing the farmer and livestock groups Tunas Barokah, Kawi Sari, Gayuh Utomo, and Mulyo Tani, enthusiastically participated in the training. They acquired new knowledge and skills on the health management of goats and sheep, as well as techniques for cultivating fresh maggots. Additionally, they were taught how to utilize vermicompost to reduce agricultural waste, such as banana peels or coffee husks, enabling them to manage economically valuable waste.

The expected outcomes of this activity include enhancing the knowledge and skills of farmers in managing the health of their livestock. Moreover, farmer group members are now capable of cultivating fresh maggots and using vermicompost to manage economically valuable agricultural waste, thus supporting environmental and economic sustainability in the village.

This training marks an important step towards achieving food security in Kalimanis Village and supports the creation of a sustainable circular economy through the integration of agriculture and livestock. mt
