Participants of the Dairy Cattle Field School in Wonoagung Village Attend Graduation at Fapet UB

Lecturers of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) organize a field school for dairy farmers in Wonoagung Village, Kasembon District, Malang Regency. Namely community service activities by transferring knowledge directly to farmers.

According to the coordinator of the field school, Dr.Ir. Tri Eko Susilorini, MP.,IPM.,ASEAN Eng, the activity which took place from November to December is a form of concern for UB Faculty of Animal Husbandry Lecturers to improve the ability of farmers. So it is hoped that local farmers will be able to meet the national milk needs and decrease imports of milk.

The problem faced by farmers in Wonoagung Village is the supply of concentrate feed which is not constant and its composition changes. This causes the quality and quantity of milk production to be less than optimal.

Through the field school, the UB Faculty of Animal Science Lecturer team provides learning materials as a solution. Such as reproductive efficiency strategies, dairy cattle rearing management, dairy cattle feeding strategies, recording and breeding of diseased cattle in cattle, the practice of making concentrates, fermentation practices (silage), as well as evaluating the practice of making concentrates and silage.

In addition, they also provided grants for two supporting tools, namely a couple hammer mill mixer (a multifunctional tool for cutting, grinding, and mixing forage) and complete tools for processing the milk into sticks and milk candies.

After six meetings, participants were given training certificates which were submitted through graduation activities, Saturday (12/18/2021). Taking place in the auditorium on the 8th floor of Gd.V Fapet UB, the activity was attended by 46 participants and attended by Camat and the Head of the Wonoagung Village.

“This field school is very useful because we breeders get useful knowledge that has never been obtained. Hopefully, activities like this will continue, in our village, there are actually a lot of potential human resources, it’s just that the knowledge of raising livestock is not qualified.” said participant representatives in conveying messages and impressions (dta)
