Community Service: Formation of Beef Cattle Cluster to Realize National Meat Self-Sufficiency

Local market demand for beef continues to increase, but farmers have not been able to meet this demand. As a result, the government imports beef and its processed products. On the other hand, this condition can worsen local farmers.

According to the Professor of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), Prof. Trinil Susilawati, the long-term solution to overcome this problem is to realize national meat self-sufficiency through strengthening beef cattle breeding. The trick is to establish a beef cattle cluster in a potential area.

He conveyed this in the socialization of the establishment of a beef cattle cluster wrapped in community service activities, Sunday (10/10/2021). The target of Trinil and Research Group Red Meat Producers Fapet UB, which consists of Dr. Nanang Febrianto, Dr. Kuswati, Aulia Puspita Anugra Yekti, M.Sc, Ari Nurul Huda, M.Sc, and Rizki Prafitri, Ph.D are breeders in Kecopokan Hamlet, Senggreng Village, Malang Regency.

“The establishment of a beef cattle cluster must also pay attention to livestock management. Among them are the selection of superior seeds, the provision of forage, management of cages, feed rations, to waste treatment.” said Trinil.Trinil

Therefore, breeders are provided with material on the selection of broodstock and the application of Artificial Insemination (injection mating) using the double dose method given by Dr.Kuswati and Aulia Puspita Anugra Yekti, M.Sc. Meanwhile, the material for planting local feed ingredients was delivered by Asri Nurul Huda, M.Sc. Then Rizki Prafitri, Ph.D shared information about the importance of group strengthening in making beef cattle clusters. (dta)
