The Study Group from the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) is named Community and Livestock Studies Research Group (CLSRG) performs community service in Benowo Village, Kediri – East Java. The team consists of Dr. Achargai Rachmawati as chairman, consisting of Dr. Rositawati Indrati, Dr. Siti Azizah, Dr. Irfan H. Djunaedi, and Anif Mukaromah Wati, M.Sc.
The theme carried was “Minimizing the Looting of Non-Timber Forest Products through Institutional Strengthening and Intensification of Goat and Sheep Farming inBuffer Zone Besowo Nature Reserve, Kediri”. The activity involved the Kediri Regency Perhutani, the East Java Ecosystem Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDAE), the Wonoasri Forest Village Community Institute (LMDH), the Tjoelanggi Besowo Community Group, and the Rojomulyo sheep breeder group.
Dr. Achadia said that the majority of the people’s livelihoods there include agriculture and animal husbandry. However, the problem that often arises in connection with nature reserves is the looting of Non-Timber Forest Products (HHBK), such as sengon leaves and forages in conservation areas for goat and sheep livestock feed.
“Livestock is a side business for most of the residents of Besowo Village, but animal feed has not been intensively and seriously pursued, only relying on forest resources.” said Achadiah
This problem involves several parties, because the Besowo Gadungan Nature Reserve is an area managed by Perhutani surrounded by protected forest areas and production forest areas.
Because of that Achadia et al provided counseling on the recording and regulation of livestock mating. As well as several materials such as a feed bank and training on making silage from agricultural waste delivered by Dr. Irfan. Maintenance of health and disease in sheep by Dr. Rositawati, institutional knowledge by Dr. Siti Azizah and Anif Mukaromah, M.Sc.
Besides that, they also provided assistance to the Rojomulyo livestock group in the form of electric hair trimmers and indigofera forage seeds. It is hoped that breeders will pay more attention to the need for intensive animal feed. So that the nutritional adequacy of livestock is fulfilled without destroying the nature reserve. (tim/dta)
