Understanding Dairy Cattle Business Opportunities Through Guest Lectures with Practitioners

Breeding beef and dairy cattle is a business opportunity because the price of cattle and their products is increasing every year. So that it can be used as a promising future investment if livestock management is carried out properly.

The dairy cattle business is more profitable than beef cattle because it gets a calf (calf) every year and produces an average of 15 to 18 liters of fresh milk per day per cow at standard grade. Although it has drawbacks, namely that cows often contract mastitis (inflammation of the udder) and cows that are less sturdy due to the instability between giving concentrate and forage.

This was conveyed by the owner of UD. Handoyo, Nur Triyanto in a practitioner guest lecture organized by the Faculty of Animal Husbandry Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), Friday (12/24/2021). Participants consist of undergraduate (S1), master (S2), and doctoral (S3) students from Fapet UB as well as undergraduate students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

The activity which took place in a hybrid manner was a series of events for the Independent Campus Competition Program (PKKM) to convey an overview to students about the condition of animal husbandry in the field. As well as explaining the business opportunities of raising livestock based on the experiences of successful entrepreneurs. So that the hope is to be able to foster the entrepreneurial spirit of students and provide an understanding of career opportunities after studying on farms.

UD. Handoyo is a business for raising beef cattle, dairy cattle and concentrate feed located in Ngaglik Village, Srengat District, Blitar Regency. Currently, Nur Triyanto owns 400 beef and dairy cattle, as well as a concentrate feed warehouse. Besides making their own feed, UD. Handoyo is a feed distributor for Central Java and West Java. Meanwhile, the fresh cow’s milk produced is sold to PT. Nestle.

“I started my business in 1993 with bank loans and started with two cows. I’m also not shy about asking more senior and experienced breeders about raising cattle,” said Nur,

“Ups and downs in business are normal, the key is never to give up. Make that mistake an encouragement to find faults and solutions. However, the main capital that must be owned to build a business is intention and determination,” he explained (dta)
