group of Animal Husbandry Waste and Compost Technology Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) held community service through online training, Saturday (23/10/2021). The team consisted of Heni Setyo Prayogi, M.Asc (chairman), Nur Cholis, M.Si, Dr. Ita Wahyu Nursita, Dr. Edhy Sudjarwo, Dr. Muharlien, and Dr. Dyah Lestari Yulianti.

They brought the material “Organic Fertilizer Management with Decomposer Technology”. This training is intended for students and alumni of animal husbandry and agriculture from all universities in Indonesia, the general public who are interested in managing organic fertilizers with decomposer technology, and groups of farmers/farmers in Malang Regency.

The resource person for the activity is Heni Setyo Prayogi, M.ASc. and Arianda Dwi Wanto, S.Pt. (President Director of PT. Tiara Kurnia) which is engaged in Organic Fertilizer Production. The material is presented in the form of videos, power points, and photographs. Then participants were given a pre-test before the event and a post-test at the end of the event to evaluate the insights.

On that occasion Heni explained decomposer technology in livestock waste management. According to him, livestock waste has the potential to be used as fertilizer because it contains a lot of organic matter. The process of degradation of organic matter by microorganisms into organic fertilizer is called decomposition. This process can be accelerated by the addition of a starter/effective microorganism, which produces bokashi compost.

The raw materials for bokashi fertilizer consist of plant residues, livestock manure, kitchen waste or a mixture of other organic materials. Bokashi fertilizer is made by utilizing the activity of an effective microorganism (EM4) as a decomposer which contains lactobacillus microbes, yeast, photosynthetic bacteria, actynomycetes and cellulose-degrading fungi.

“EM4 (decomposer) technology is an agricultural cultivation technology to improve the health and fertility of soil and plants by using microbes that are beneficial for plant growth. Because EM4 functions to ferment soil organic matter into compounds that are easily absorbed by plants.” explained Heni

Meanwhile, resource person Arianda Dwi Wanto, S.Pt., said that the organic fertilizer management industry has very good prospects in the future to improve the physical, chemical, and biological structure of agricultural land in Indonesia. The benefits of managing livestock waste into organic fertilizer are improving soil elements to be fertile, microbes can decompose organic materials contained in fertilizers and soil, reducing the toxic content contained in agricultural crops, the soil becomes loose and fertile.
