Instant Corn Rice and Organic Waste Processing Applications Bring UB Students to Win Awards at the 8th UTU Awards

Two student teams Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) won first place and first place in the 8th University of Teuku Umar (UTU) Awards 2022 event, Sunday – Monday (4-5/11). This achievement contributes to UB in defending the rotating trophy of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology which was successfully brought home in 2021. 

UTU awards are an annual competition in the field of entrepreneurship to increase the number of entrepreneurial students. The competition categories organized by UTU include Entrepreneurship Research Competition, Online Store Design Competition, Agro and Marine-Based Innovation Competition, and Business Planning Competition.

The first winning team of Fapet UB consists of Trio Angger Saputro, Wahhab Rizqus Syihab, and Eko Prihatmaji. Together with the supervisor, Yuli Frita Nuningtyas, M.Sc. they made a business plan “saentong”, namely instant corn rice with a distinctive taste of the archipelago. In order to maintain its distinctive taste, the process of making corn rice still uses the traditional method, after grinding the corn is steamed and dried again.

According to Eko Prihatmati, the business idea was motivated by the need for healthy food that can prevent high blood sugar levels. Besides, as a preservation of traditional Indonesian food. The products used are 100 percent natural corn without preservatives, gluten free, low in calories, and rich in nutrients.

Meanwhile, the first runner-up group was obtained by Zuhdan Alaik (Fapet) and Mukhammad Rizal (Faculty of Economics and Business), as well as Dr. Premy Puspitawati Rahayu as a supervisor. They created the first integrated organic waste processing and distribution service application in Indonesia called “GoodFarm Indonesia”. Through this application, you can obtain information on the presence of organic waste in large quantities and have not emitted a strong odor. Furthermore, the organic waste obtained is used as a medium for the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) or better known as magot caterpillars.

Zuhdan said that one of the effective solutions in solving the problem of organic waste in Indonesia is to maintain BSF. Because in addition to its ability to decompose organic waste, BSF can be used as fodder for poultry and fish. The nutritional value is approximately 36.15% protein, 28.12% fat, 1.52% calcium, and 4720.59 kcal/kg metabolic energy. (dta)
