Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students of Animal Science Faculty of UB Collaborate to Check The Pregnancy on Beef Cattle

Students of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) conduct pregnancy checks on beef cattle, Sunday (22/08/2021). The team who are members of the Red Meat Producers Research Group (RG) lecturer research consists of students from the Undergraduate Program (S1), Master Program (S2), and Doctoral Program (S3).

Accompanied by an inseminator officer who is an alumni of Fapet UB, the inspection was carried out in the beef cattle cluster area assisted by RG Red Meat in Sumber Pucung District. Their target is cows that are the result of several researches and community service by Fapet UB lecturers.

Among them are collaborative research with Bank Indonesia representatives from Malang, collaborative research with Gadjah Mada University and Sebelas Maret University, and UB’s flagship research. The results of these activities are used by students to complete thesis, theses, and dissertations.

The previous research and service activity was the provision of additional concentrate feed for one month. And perform injection mating using frozen sexing semen (Y sperm) to get male calves (calf) and frozen semen without sexing in double doses through the method deep insemination to 120 local cattle or Ongole breeds (PO) and simmental breed.

Based on the results of the pregnancy examination using rectal palpation and ultrasonography, it shows the number of reproductive failures. This is due to the high blood content of limousine cows, due to PO cattle being crossed with limousine cows so that 75% of the blood in the calves is limousine blood. In addition, the feed given is below standard. Both factors result in persistent corpus luteum, cystic follicles, and premature embryonic death.

Observing this phenomenon, they suggest mating with PO or Brahman cattle and providing additional feed, especially before and after Artificial Insemination (IB) or injection mating. (nien / dta)
