As an effort to meet the learning outcomes of the Faculty of Animal Science University University makes a 3 in 1 guest lecture program. That is a teaching and learning process with three presenters in one subject. The instructors consist of lecturers from foreign universities, practitioners, and UB’s internal lecturers.

Carrying the theme Dairy Nutrition, the participants were undergraduate program students, Tuesday (20/9/2022). Meanwhile, the speakers invited were Siska Aditya, Ph.D., a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) as well as a lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The man who graduated from the Medical University of Vienna is a specialist in food safety, especially milk.

Sisko (Siska Aditya’s nickname) delivered material Rumen Microbiome Is A Key For Animal Health. According to him Subacute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) is a decrease in the level of acidity or pH in the rumen. SARA will harm productivity through changes in the fermentation parameters, feed intake, passage rate, diarrhea, diet digestibility, and animal performance. Thus causing ketosis, mastitis, abscesses in the liver, laminitis, and decreased function of the abomasum.

“One way to deal with SARA is to reduce the size of the TMR feed particles. The smaller it is, the easier it will be dissolved and digested by livestock.” explained Sisko

Continuing into the discussion session, Roby Setyo, one of the participants, asked about epithelial damage that affects the mammary glands. Can this damage be permanent, and does the liver have a limit on its ability to detoxify toxins.

“The damage to the epithelium is not permanent and can be regenerated, as long as it is given a high level of forage during the dry period to make fat deposition, it will also grow the rumen epithelium. The ability to detoxify is not fast, so if too many endotoxin attacks, the immune system can be damaged.” his answer (asr/dta)
