Research group Red Meat Producer (RG-RMP) Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) plans to develop a beef cattle business in the form of fattening and breeding in Sumber Pucung District, Malang Regency. Chaired by Dr. Mashudi, a team consisting of Rizki Prafitri, Ph.D, Dr. Nanang Febrianto, Aulia Puspita AY, M.Sc., Asri Nurul Huda, M.Sc, and Poespitasari Hazanah Ndaru, MP.
The first step they took was to conduct exploratory research on basic data about the beef cattle business in four villages. These include Senggreng Village, Jatiguwi Village, Trenyang Village, and Sambigede Village.
Based on the research data conducted from July to October 2021, it is known that livestock is the second highest livelihood after farming. However, the majority of breeders are more than 50 years old and most of them are elementary and junior high school graduates.

Meanwhile, in terms of types of livestock and their ownership, the largest number of ownership is adult females from the simmental breed through a mating system using the Artificial Insemination (IB) method. The feed provided includes rice straw, corn straw, sugarcane shoots, elephant grass, and field grass with additional concentrate using rice bran.
This shows that the nutritional status is still quite good and has excellent potential for local feed ingredients. Meanwhile, from the reproductive aspect, there is a fairly high variation in the success rate of AI, thus indicating the success of AI will be achieved after being carried out more than five times.
According to Mashudi, from the results of the study, it can be concluded that the business of fattening and breeding beef cattle has very good potential in Sumber Pucung District, Malang Regency. However, assistance is needed for farmers to be able to take advantage of the potential of local feed ingredients to increase production efficiency, reproduction, and business economy. And needed further research is that focuses on the method on-farm feeding trial, to measure nutritional status. Because basically, the nutritional status affects the production and reproductive performance of livestock. (dta)
