The Doctoral Program in Animal Science of the Faculty of Animal Science at Universitas Brawijaya (FAPET UB) hosted a Curriculum Reconstruction Workshop on Friday (07/05/2024) at the Grand Mercure Hotel in Malang. The event was attended by FAPET UB’s leadership, including professors and teaching staff.

In his opening remarks, Dean of FAPET UB, Prof. Halim, emphasized the need for curriculum updates in line with recent changes in the Permendikbudristek. “The revisions include an adjustment in the credit load from 32 to 65 credits for doctoral programs, with dissertation credits increasing from 28 to at least 45 credits, along with the requirement for publication in two international journals,” explained Prof. Halim. He also added that the program would involve supervisors from various disciplines, not just a single specialization.

The workshop was led by the Head of the Doctoral Program in Animal Science (KPS), Prof. Osfar, assisted by Dr. Rizky Prafitri, the Vice Dean of Academics. Prof. Osfar stated that the main goal of the workshop was to align perceptions concerning curriculum reconstruction in accordance with Permendikbudristek No. 53 of 2023 on Higher Education Quality Assurance.

Key points emphasized in the workshop included alumni feedback and the importance of literature reviews for doctoral students. “There is a need to reassess courses that do not align with the doctoral students’ expertise,” said Prof. Osfar. Prof. Trinil, a senior professor and doctoral teacher, suggested the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) content in each course.

Prof. Suyadi highlighted in his proposal that the main goals should aim to reach Levels 6-7 of the Indonesian Qualification Framework (KKNI), focusing on resolving relevant industrial issues. Meanwhile, Prof. Hendrawan added that supervisors selected should be relevant to the students’ fields, reflecting the need to return to the educational philosophy underlying the program.

From this intensive discussion, it was agreed to reconstruct the curriculum of the Doctoral Program in Animal Science at FAPET UB to 72 credits. This is expected to enhance the quality of postgraduate education at the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya. mt
