“Feduck” Feed Additive For Duck to Create Low-Fat Duck Meat

Students of the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) make a feed additive for ducks. They are a collaboration class of 2019 and 2021, including Aurega Puspa Anugrailah (215050107111025), Randali Irfandi (215050101111021), and Sularso (195050101111100). Together with the supervising lecturer Prof. Osfar Sjofjan, whose product is called “Feduck”, is made from golden snail and red dragon fruit skin.

Sularso said the golden snail meat which had been extracted into oil contained 30.4% omega-3 fatty acids. Meanwhile, dragon fruit peel contains 10.79% pectin, 150.46 mg/100 g betacyanin pigment, and 69.30% dietary fiber. 

Based on the research he conducted, if Feduck is given to ducks it can increase omega-3 ducks, increase body weight, reduce FCR (feed conversion ratio), lower LDL levels, and increase HDL levels. These results were obtained when compared with the control treatment.

“The benefit feduck is to reduce cholesterol levels in duck meat, especially LDL (low density lipoprotein) which is bad cholesterol for the human body.” explained Sularso.

He added that the background of this research was due to the low national consumption of duck meat. The cause is high levels of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) in duck meat, so if consumed by humans in excess it can cause coronary heart disease.

Through this product Sularso, et al won second place in a national-level scientific writing competition at the IV Livestock Product Technology (PROTEIN) Week, Saturday (12/11/2022). Namely the LKTIN organized by University Makassar with the theme Development of MSME-Based Livestock Product Innovation in the Industrial Age 4.0. (dta)
