Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia number 140381 / MPK / KP / 2020 dated December 30, 2020, stated to appoint Dr. Ir. Puguh Surjowardojo, MP, became a Professor in the field of Dairy Livestock Management. This condition makes the number of active professors in the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) 18 people.

At the Widyaloka Building, the Senate’s inauguration was carried out offline, which was attended by specific invitees, Saturday (8/5/2021). However, other invitees can join online via the ZOOM meeting.

Dr. Puguh, in his scientific oration, delivered about “Mastitis Prevention Management in FH (Friesian Holstein) Dairy Cows through Teat Dipping with Herbal Extracts Antiseptics.” According to him, dairy cows are ruminants that produce milk which is very important to meet the nutritional needs of the community and a strategic commodity.

However, the threat of problems looming over the dairy industry is mastitis. Namely, infection is caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, molds, fungi, and other causes that cause inflammation of the udders and nipples of dairy cows.

“Mastitis causes huge economic losses because it reduces milk production and quality.” said the man born in Lamongan. The

solution to prevent mastitis is to improve the cleanliness of the cage and milking officers. And followed by the technique of teat dipping (dipping the nipples) with an antiseptic solution. The use of antiseptic solutions containing iodine, chlorous acid solution, and chloride solutions teat dipping before and after milking effectively reduces the incidence of mastitis in dairy cows.

However, currently, Puguh and other researchers in Indonesia are developing herbal antiseptic solutions with anti-microbial compounds, namely flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The herbal plants used are found around the breeder environment, such as cherry leaves, binahong leaves, green betel leaves, red betel leaves, beluntas leaves, moringa leaves, and the fruit of the divine crown. Based on the results of his research, the extract of the leaves solution was able to inhibit the growth of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Escherichia coli.

“We are trying to realize the downstream of herbal extracts into preparations that are easily affordable and inexpensive for smallholder farmers to prevent mastitis. So that mastitis can be prevented as early as possible by recognizing subclinical symptoms. To prevent losses resulting in high morbidity (unhealthy) and even mortality (death) of dairy cows. ” his conclusion (dta)
