Madura Cattle is one of the original Indonesian cattle breeds, which has several superior characteristics and essential functions for Madura breeders. The distinctive feature that stands out is that both males and females are brick red. The hind legs are white; the forelegs are pink.
Thebodysmall, the legs are short, intense, shape and the sharp horns are curved like a crescent moon or grow slightly to the side and upwards because this cow is the result of a cross between a domestic bull and a zebu cow.
While the function of Madura cattle in the farming system on Madura Island is as labor and beauty contest cows for female cows called sonok and seeds, karapan, and fattening for bulls.
Therefore, a lecturer at the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), Irida Novianti, S.Pt., M.Agr.,Sc believes that efforts are needed to increase the productivity of Madura cattle. So he conducted a study that explored genes to determine their exterior performance and reproductive characteristics, namely inhibin A (INHA), inhibin BA (INHBA), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1).
The study used sperm (semen) and DNA samples from Madura bulls in the Pamekasan area and the Singosari Center for Artificial Insemination (BBIB), carried out by body measurements, assessment of semen production characteristics, identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and studies of associations between SNP identified.
The results showed that there was only one SNP for INHA, which significantly affected sperm viability in the Pamekasan male population. And there is a substantial relationship between SNP for INHA and IGF1 SNP with chest circumference, height, and hip height.
“The results of this study can be a starting point for selecting superior Madurese males in Pamekasan to select males similar to banteng (adikara) by phenotype using genotypes,” he said The
The research entitled “Association and Potential Genetic Superiority Identification of Madura Bulls Based on Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Identification in Inhibin and IGF1 Genes” is a dissertation paper tested online, Friday (16/07/2021).
After taking the online open dissertation exam, Irida was declared to have graduated from the Postgraduate Animal Science doctoral program, Fapet UB. (dta)
