Teaching Staff Obtains Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Wageningen University and Research, The Netherlands

Oleh : Admin Fapet

Teaching staff of Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), Eko Nugroho, S.Pt.,M.Sc. obtained his doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D) in agricultural economics and rural policy from Wageningen University and Research (WUR), the Netherlands. He has completed his doctoral program studies and took the open dissertation examination, Tuesday (20/9/2022) at the Omnia auditorium.

The research entitled “Integrating Local Cattle Production and The Teak Forest Management in East Java Indonesia” brought him the title. The research was under the guidance of Prof. Wim Heijman and Dr. Rico Ihle (Chair of Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy group) and Prof. Simon Oosting (Chair group Animal Production System).

Eko said the research was motivated by the national cattle population of 98 percent from smallholder beef cattle. But sadly, farmers often live in poverty and live in rural areas of Java Island.

For beef cattle farmers who live in or around state forests, such as teak forests, for example, they will access forest resources that are widely available freely to support cattle rearing. Due to limited land, feed, and capital resources. Meanwhile, local community access to uncontrolled forest resources has the potential to trigger conflicts with forest management authorities (Perhutani) which often occur in state-owned forest areas.

“Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the relationship between smallholder beef cattle farming with teak forest management and poverty.” said Eko

Meanwhile, Prof.Dr.Sc.Agr.Ir. Suyadi, MS, IPU., ASEAN Eng. as the Dean of Fapet UB, was also invited to take part in the exam procession. As well as a lecturer interested in Nutrition and Animal Feed, Prof. Dr.Ir. Ifar Subagyo, M.Agr.ST was brought in as an opponent. The acquisition of a Ph.D by a lecturer with an interest in livestock socio-economics increases the number of teaching staff with a Doctorate degree in Fapet UB to 62 people. (en/dta)
