Faculty of AnimalScience Lecturers Provide Assistance to Improve Management of Joper Chicken Maintenance and Feed 

Free-range chicken is Indonesian local chicken whose maintenance is released freely and is not mass-cultured for commercial purposes. So the chicken meat produced is healthier because it is not contaminated with chemicals used for treatment or administration of vitamins. 

The market demand for chicken meat is increasing but breeders have not been able to fulfill it. So there was an innovation of cross-breeding between male and female native chickens of the Bangkok laying race, which was called the jowo super (joper) native chicken. Several groups of poultry farmers have developed this chicken but have not implemented optimal maintenance and feed management. Like the livestock group partners of UD. The activities they carry out are socialization and discussion related to the process of selecting joper chickens from the starter phase to the finisher. Followed by a video showing the maintenance of joper chickens in an open house cage. Meanwhile, to improve capabilities in the field of feed, the team conducted socialization on the introduction of local feed ingredients and their potential as joper chicken feed ingredients. As well as providing training and assistance in preparing feed using software .

According to Frita, the prospects for cultivating joper chickens are very potential because they are easy to maintain, resistant to noise (can live in urban areas) both in the lowlands/highlands, more resistant to disease and stress, stable selling prices, easy to market, dirt and cages don’t sting too much. Besides that, the chicken harvest period is around 55-66 days and can produce 180 eggs per brood/year. In joper male chickens, the body weight at the age of two months reaches 1 kg.
