The Faculty of Animal Science at Brawijaya University (UB) has successfully conducted a seminar on artificial insemination technology using sexed semen on Saturday, November 18, 2023. The event was attended by 25 dairy farmers and enthusiastic inseminators. The faculty members involved in the event include Eko Nugroho, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., Prof.Dr.Ir. Trinil Susilawati, MS., IPU., ASEAN Eng, Prof. Dr. Ir. Budi Hartono, MS., IPU., ASEAN Eng, Prof. Dr. Ir. Kuswati, MS., IPM., ASEAN Eng, and Dr. Ir. Nanang Febrianto, S.Pt., MP. They provided information regarding artificial insemination technology and the use of sexed semen to produce female dairy calves.
“The innovation of artificial insemination with sexed semen is a concrete step to improve the productivity of dairy farming in this region. We are optimistic that with the adoption of this technology, members of the Margo Mulyo Milk Cooperative can enhance the quality and quantity of female dairy cattle produced,” expressed Eko Nugroho, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., as the team leader.
Sexed semen is a technology that allows the selection of the gender of spermatozoa used for artificial insemination. Consequently, farmers can be more selective in producing female dairy calves according to their needs. This technology has the potential to have a positive impact on increasing milk production and the welfare of farmers.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Kuswati, MS., IPM., ASEAN Eng, explained that the application of this technology can also assist farmers in choosing the desired gender of cattle. With this capability, farmers can control the population of female dairy cattle according to market needs and improve the efficiency of milk production.
In addition to providing theoretical explanations, the faculty team also conducted practical training for cooperative members. They demonstrated the steps of artificial insemination using sexed semen directly, providing a deeper understanding to the farmers.
It is hoped that this seminar activity will be an initial step towards a positive transformation in the dairy farming sector in Malang Regency. With the support of technology and knowledge from the faculty team at Brawijaya University’s Faculty of Animal Science, it is anticipated that members of the Margo Mulyo Milk Cooperative can achieve success in improving well-being through the production of high-quality female dairy cattle.
