Lecturers at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Brawijaya University conducted research on the morphometry of local, exotic and cross-breed sheep in Selorejo village, Blitar Regency, from July to November 2023. The research team was chaired by Muhammad Pramujo, S.Pt. M.Si, with members Prof. Dr. Ir. Sucik Maylinda, Ms., Prof. Dr. Ir. Veronica Margareta Ani Nurgiartiningsih, M.Sc, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tri Eko Susilorini, Mp., and Adelina Ari Hamiyanti, S.Pt., Mp.

This research was motivated by researchers’ curiosity regarding the morphometric comparison between local sheep, exotic sheep and their crosses. The data obtained will later be used as a basis for determining development strategies for local sheep and crosses between local and exotic sheep such as Texel and Dorper sheep. As fairly new imported livestock, Texel and Dorper sheep need to be assessed regarding their suitability for local environmental conditions. Observations of qualitative and quantitative characters need to be carried out to analyze adaptability, especially quantitative characters. On the other hand, qualitative characteristics are also important to see the extent of the authenticity of these sheep breeds by comparing them with their original characteristics. In West Java, Garut sheep are crossed with Dorper sheep to produce sheep that can produce meat with a low fat content (lean meat). The results of crosses with local sheep showed satisfactory results, especially because of the high body weight gain. Thus, it is necessary to research the phenotypic variations of qualitative and quantitative characters in Texel and Dorper sheep in the rearing location in the Wlingi area which is known as an area with sufficient feed availability and cool air temperatures. This research was funded by PNBP funds from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and in collaboration with CV. DWI TUNGGAL MANDIRI (DTM) which operates in the field of livestock facilities and infrastructure.
