Bondowoso Regency, which is located in East Java Province, is a coffee producer. Almost 30 percent of the plantations there are planted with coffee, one of which is Sukorejo Village as a buffer area for Ijen Crater which produces arabica coffee. The average farmer can harvest two to three tons in one period.
But unfortunately this abundant yield causes a buildup of coffee skin waste which can pollute air and environmental pollution. It can even make a death on the coffee’s tree itself if it is allowed to accumulate in the plantation area.
On the other hand, the Bondowoso Government has reprimanded farmers for the latest environmental conditions. Because it is based on the assessment of unesco assessors on the Ijen Geopark. As a result of people who cannot use or process coffee skin waste.
This was conveyed by the Head of the Forest Village Community Institution (LMDH) of Sukorejo Village to a Lecturer at Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Monday (4/7/2022). The doctoral team consisting of lecturers and UB students provides solutions by utilizing coffee skin waste as animal feed. However, it needs special processing in order to get the nutritional content needed by livestock.
They consisted of Prof. Ir. Hendrawan Soetanto, M.Rur.Sc.Ph.D (Faculty of Animal Science), Asri Nurul Huda, S.Pt, M. P., M.Sc (Faculty of Animal Science), drh. Viski Fitri Hendrawan M.Vet, (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), Dr. Rita Parmawati, SP., ME (Faculty of Agriculture) and Dr. Suhartini, MP (Postgraduate School). Involving four students of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology &Agrotechnology of Agriculture and five students of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry who participated in the thematic real work lecture program (KKN-T).
Prof. Hendrawan as the team leader explained that coffee skins generally have a high enough fiber content so as to reduce the digestibility value of feed. The innovation that the team will do is to process with the addition of alkali in the form of NaOH then incubated for 7 days. Then these results will increase the digestibility value up to three times that of untreated coffee skins.
“This assistance aims to reduce coffee skin waste, preserve the environment, while increasing the economic value of coffee skins. So that farmers benefit from their seeds and skin. ” said Hendrawan (izzu/dta)
