Dissertation of Sri Suryaningsih Djunu,S.Pt.,MP : Utilizing Goroho Banana Peel Waste as Corn Substitute for Laying Chicken Feed

An essential element of success in raising laying hens is the availability of quality feed because it can affect the appearance of production and health of chickens.

Chicken farmers tend to use commercial feeds that are prepared based on the nutritional needs of livestock from the complete dietary content. But the cost is approximately 60 to 70% of the total cost of production.

50% of commercial feed ingredients use corn, but the availability of corn in Indonesia is still limited, so imports from abroad are needed to meet the needs. This causes the high price of commercial feed.

Based on this phenomenon, a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Husbandry, State University of Gorontalo (UNG), Sri Suryaningsih Djunu, S.Pt., MP, is looking for alternative materials to replace corn that are quality, inexpensive, independent of the harvest season and easy to obtain. According to him, one of the alternative feed ingredients for energy sources and a beta carotene source close to the equivalent of corn is banana peel.

“Banana peel contains high vitamin A, especially provitamin A, namely beta carotene as much as 5.127 mg/100 g; this beta carotene content is higher than corn beta carotene, which is 3.3 mg/100 g,” Sri said

Beta carotene is a carotenoid that acts as an egg yolk pigment to increase the yolk color score. In addition, beta carotene also functions as an antioxidant that can prevent the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids and produce products with a good fatty acid composition.

Sri found the Goroho banana peel (Musa acuminate.sp), a local variety banana from Gorontalo and North Sulawesi. Goroho banana peel contains 5.4 water, 18.68 ash, 7.07 fat, 6.56 protein, 10.03 crude fiber, and 52.24% nitrogen-free extract (BETN).

Goroho banana peels as feed ingredients for laying hens needs to be fermented using Rhizopus oligosphorus and microorganisms Trichoderma viride. The goal is to reduce crude fiber content while increasing the nutritional value of other substances.

He put that research into a dissertation report entitled “Evaluation of the Nutritional Value of Goroho Banana Peel (Musa acuminafe, sp) Fermented by Rhizopus oligosphorus and Trichoderma viride as Substitution of Corn in Feed on the Performance of Layer Chickens.” Because Sri is a student of the Animal Science Doctoral program at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Brawijaya who has taken an online open dissertation exam on Friday (14/1/2022).
