Indonesia has a rich genetic source of livestock, especially cattle, which is the basic capital in the development of the livestock sector. So it is necessary to improve genetic quality in order to be able to provide food sources of animal protein. One of the livestock commodities that is the mainstay and has the potential to be developed is Bali cattle. Due to its ability to adapt to tropical environments and available feed, carcass quality is very good and fertility is good.

The government has launched several efforts to improve the genetic quality of beef cattle, including Bali cattle, such as the Beef Self-Sufficiency Program (PSDS), the Special Efforts for Compulsory Pregnancy Cattle (UPSUS-SIWAB), the Mainstay of the Country Commodity Cow-Buffalo Program (SIKOMANDAN), and performance tests (Performance Test). As well as setting standards for Bali cattle breeds by grouping them according to three criteria (groups I, II and III) based on body size and area of breeding source. These series of programs continue to be pursued to improve the quality and quantity of Bali cattle, but so far have not shown significant results.

So it is necessary to evaluate the breeding program in order to achieve an increase in the genetic quality of Bali cattle through selection to produce superior breeds. The Bali cattle selection program will be effective if it is carried out based on genetic parameters (heritability and genetic correlation) and breeding values.

This was revealed by Rosidi Aziz, S.Pt., M.Sc. in his research entitled “Evaluation of the Genetic Progress of Bali Cattle Based on the Traits of Body Weight and Linear Body Size at BPTU-HPT Denpasar.” According to him, a genetic evaluation of Bali cattle needs to be carried out at the Denpasar Superior Livestock Breeding and Forage Forage Agency (BPTU-HPT) because there is an area for conservation and improvement of the genetic quality of Bali cattle. Besides that, there are several issues such as fluctuations in production traits, even genetic quality decline.

The research material he used was male and female Bali cattle with 01 days of age as many as 535 heads, 483 heads at 205 days, and 405 heads at 365 days. While the object of research is quantitative characteristics consisting of data on body weight and body measurements, as well as a database of performance test results which contains data on body weight and body measurements, date of birth, date of weighing and measurement, pedigree records of each individual child. The general conclusion of this study is that selection for body weight and body size in Bali cattle aged 01, 205 and 365 days at BPTU-HPT Denpasar can be improved through the application of selection based on genetic parameters and breeding values.

Research compiled with Prof. V.M. Ani Nurgiatiningsih, Prof. Gatot Ciptadi, and Prof. Sri Wahjuningsih as the promoter is the final dissertation research which was presented through an open examination, Friday (21/7/2023). Rosidi is a Lecturer at Nahdlatul Ulama University Blitar who is pursuing further studies in the Doctoral Program in Animal Science at the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB).
