Boomerang: Educating Students About Green Economy in the Agrocomplex Sector

The Student Business Entity Bureau of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) held a BUM activity to Share Information Through Webinar Now (BUMERANG), Saturday (20/11/2021). The theme given is the cultivation of maggot black soldier fly (BSF), as an effort to realize a green economy through businesses in the environmentally friendly agro-complex sector.

The resource persons at the event were Fatimah Himmatina and Nala Amirah Putri. According to Fatima, Indonesia ranks second as the largest food waste producer in the world. This causes pollution and destroys beauty, but on the other hand it has the potential to be used as a medium for cultivating BSF maggots. Namely the larvae of a large black fly that looks like a wasp. Although classified as flies, these animals do not land in the garbage so they do not carry disease.

“Maggot cultivation can reduce waste into compost. Because 750 kg of BSF maggot is able to decompose approximately two tons of organic waste in just two to three weeks. Besides that, it can also be used as animal feed.” said Fathimah

Meanwhile, the resource person Nala said that through maggot cultivation, a green economy could grow. That is an economic idea that aims to improve the welfare and social equality of the community. At the same time reducing environmental damage. (dta)
