Milk production in Indonesia which inverse proportionally with the increasing of consumer demand makes Faculty of Animal Husbandry students created a mastitis preventive medicine in cows, named elim sai. The product was created by using fragrant citronella which are processed in a way with chloroform solvent thus producing antiseptic liquid of essential oil.
The team delegates, Floridina, mentioned that fragrant citronella is very abundant in Indonesia and easy in the way to obtain. Meanwhile the using of chloroform solvent in fragrant citronella extract production tends to be more effective compared with hexan and methanol solvent. This regard could be seen from high inhibitory towards Escherichia coli, Staphylococus aureusand Salmonella typhi.
The Faculty of Animal Husbandry students’ innovation brought them in grabbing runner up position in Al Qur’an Writing Competition titled Maqalah Madimun Al Qur’an (MamaQ) held by Al Qur’an Study Club (ASC) of The State University of Malang for three days (16-18/9/2016).
In the event, UB delegates departed by lifted a title “ELIM SAI: Utilization of Chloroform Extract from Solid Waste of Fragrant Citronella (Cymbopogon Nardus), an Implementation of Surat Al Mukminun Ayat 21 and Al Hadits to Prevent Mastitis Disease in Dairy Cows and Advancing Indonesian Farming”.
“Alhamdulillah, we do not expect that we will grab runner up position, since our less deep in understanding about hadits and Al Qur’an. Based on translation of Surat Al Mukminun Ayat 21 which says “And indeed in cattle there is something that you should take as a parable; We give you a drink which coming out of its stomach and it also has many benefits for you, from it also all of you eat”, we concluded that cattle which produce milk could be used to fulfill human needs for consumption or medicine,” he said.
