Utilizing Local Feed Materials as Silage Boosts Cattle Productivity in Sukho Bakti Livestock Group

Malang, December 6, 2023 – A groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing cattle productivity in the Sukho Bakti Livestock Group, Ngajum Subdistrict, Malang Regency, has garnered attention from the Public Service Agency’s Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) dedication program. The program, led by Filoza Marwi, M.Pt., included team members Dr. Feri Eko Hermanto, Tina Sri Purwanti, Ph.D., Rafika Febriani Putri M.Pt., Ani Atul Arif, M.Si., and Doni Herviyanto M.Pt.

The utilization of local feed materials as silage for cattle has proven to be an innovative solution resulting in increased productivity across various locations. In the city of Malang, traditional cattle farmers are transitioning from commercial feed to this approach to improve livestock health and cost efficiency.

In efforts to address cost challenges and feed availability, several farmers in the Sukho Bakti Livestock Group have successfully employed local feed materials such as agricultural waste—straw, grasses, and post-harvest plant residues—as the primary components in silage production. This fermentation process aids in preserving the nutritional quality of feed materials, reducing wastage, and creating longer-lasting feed.

Mr. Ahmad, a cattle farmer in Ngajum Subdistrict, has successfully implemented this concept, witnessing improved livestock health and production outcomes. “I previously struggled to obtain quality feed at an affordable price. However, after utilizing silage from local materials like straw and agricultural residues, my livestock has become healthier and more productive,” he stated.

The success of utilizing silage from local feed materials hinges on precise manufacturing processes. Farmers have adopted meticulous fermentation techniques, provided suitable environments, and carefully adjusted feed material proportions to achieve optimal results.

Filoza Marwi M.Pt, an animal nutrition expert, explained, “Silage produced from local materials can be an effective solution to enhance the availability of quality feed. The fermentation process helps maintain nutrition and creates a feed source richer in nutrients for cattle.”

In addition to nutritional benefits, the use of local feed materials as silage also has positive environmental impacts. By utilizing previously overlooked agricultural waste, farmers contribute to reducing agricultural waste and producing environmentally friendly feed products. (TIM) / (MT)
