Making Silage for Animal Feed as an Alternative Solution for Animal Feed

Making Silage for Animal Feed as an Alternative Solution for Animal Feed

The Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Brawijaya University held a training event on Making Silage for Animal Feed. This event was held at the Sumber Sekar Field Laboratory Tuesday, 24/10/2023. Also present at the event was the Head of the Field Laboratory Dr.Ir. Hermanto, MP. He said that in order to ensure an adequate supply of feed for livestock during the feed crisis, the Sumber Sekar Field Laboratory held training on making silage as an effective alternative. Silage, as a fermented feed, consists of 2kg of tumpi, 1kg of molasses and 1kg of fml mixed together and then put into a barrel containing 10kg of elephant grass which has been chopped.

In several discussions regarding the problem of animal feed shortages in Indonesia, many breeders have switched to producing silage independently. This silage feed is considered a more affordable and efficient alternative, especially in the face of significant increases in animal feed prices.

It is hoped that with wider adoption of silage production, farmers throughout Indonesia will have better access to quality and affordable animal feed, and help reduce the impact of recent increases in feed prices.

Making silage as an alternative to animal feed is increasingly becoming a major concern for livestock farmers, which is expected to be a sustainable solution in facing the problem of animal feed availability in the future. (AEO)
