Guest Lecture Prof. Loh Teck Chwen from University Putra Malaysia

Last September, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, a well-known university in Indonesia, held a series of very valuable guest lectures in the context of “Visiting Professor 3 in 1” by a professor in the field of poultry feed nutrition from abroad, namely Prof. Loh Teck Chwen from University Putra Malaysia. This guest lecture took place over two sessions on 23 and 30 September 2023.

Prof. Loh Teck Chwen is an experienced professor in the field of animal nutrition and has conducted in-depth research on topics related to feed manipulation, environmental manipulation in heat stress situations, as well as feed ingredient procurement strategies for poultry, especially broiler and layer chickens.

This guest lecture activity was attended by non-ruminant livestock nutrition students from classes A, B, and C. These students were very enthusiastic to listen and interact directly with Prof. Loh Teck Chwen, who lectured with passion and deep knowledge.

The first session on September 23 discussed feed manipulation in poultry, with a special focus on broiler chickens. Prof. Loh Teck Chwen explains various techniques and strategies to improve feed efficiency, growth and health of broiler chickens. The students were active in discussing and asking questions directly to this professor from Malaysia.

The second session on September 30th emphasized more on aspects of environmental manipulation in situations of heat stress in livestock, as well as strategies for procuring feed ingredients for layers. Prof. Loh Teck Chwen shares his knowledge on how to manage livestock environments to keep them comfortable and productive under heat stress, as well as how to design efficient feeding programs for layers.

This guest lecture activity ran smoothly, and the students gave very positive feedback. They feel lucky to be able to learn directly from an international livestock expert and gain valuable insight into the field of livestock nutrition and management.

The Faculty of Animal Husbandry hopes that activities like this will continue and open up more opportunities for students to engage in interactive learning from leading livestock experts, such as Prof. Loh Teck Chwen. This is an important step in improving the quality of education and research in the field of animal husbandry at this university.
