Health management is an important aspect that must be considered and properly implemented so that livestock productivity is in accordance with its genetic potential. One of the inhibiting factors causing low livestock productivity is the lack of knowledge of farmers about livestock health management. This causes various diseases in livestock and results in economic losses such as decreased production, reproductive disorders, increased medical expenses, and even death.

According to the Lecturer of the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), Dr. Adelina Ari Hamiyanti, health management that can be implemented by breeders includes cage sanitation, regular administration of vitamins, and deworming.Cage sanitation is a cage hygiene program that aims to prevent the entry and transfer of germs and parasites that attack livestock using disinfectants at the recommended dose.

He and the community service grant team provided counseling and cage sanitation training to members of the farmer cooperative Pendowo Jatimulyo, Wonosari Gunung Kawi District, Malang Regency, (January-June 2023). Their Knowledge of breeders regarding the health management of dairy goats is very minimal. The condition of the cattle sheds did not meet the criteria for a healthy enclosure, because the distance between the cages and the breeder’s house was too close, the slope of the cage floor was not suitable so that feces accumulated under the cage, there was no sewage channel, and the cage had not been disinfected regularly. In addition, the provision of vitamins and deworming drugs has not been routinely carried out.

In response to that Adel did counseling to farmers about the importance of livestock health and its impact on the productivity of dairy goats. Health management focused on cage sanitation, giving vitamins, and deworming. The goal is to improve health, reproduction, and reduce mortality (death).

“Livestock the udder is very important as a source of income for members of the Pendowo Jatimulyo cooperative. Because the livestock business is hereditary and is still cultivated traditionally. Each breeder has 10 to 20 goats.” explained Adele

“Through this activity it is expected to add insight, knowledge, and skills so as to increase livestock productivity.” she continued

The team members involved in the activity included Prof. Gatot Ciptadi (Fapet), M. Pramujo, M.Sc. (Fapet), Ardyah Ramadani Irsanti Putri, M.Sc. (FMIPA). As well as involving two students, namely M. Nur Iklas and Rahmi Yuniasari Hidayat. (dta)
