Lecturers from the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), who are members of the PNBP service program team, conducted counseling to the community at the Sukho Bakti Livestock Group, Ngajum District – Malang Regency, Monday (24/7/2023). They consist of Doni Herviyanto M.Pt. as chairman, consisting of Dr. Feri Eko Hermanto, Tina Sri Purwanti, Ph.D., Rafika Febriani Putri M.Pt., Ani Atul Arif, M.Sc., and Filoza Marwi, M.Pt.
The team leader, Doni Hervianto, stated that the activity which was participated in by all members of the livestock group was an effort to support increasing the productivity of cattle farming among smallholder breeders. Based on the initial survey, it was found that the obstacles faced by farmers, such as pregnancy failure, long calving intervals, and high production costs in raising mother cattle. This was conveyed by Achmad Ainul Yaqin as the head of the Sukho Bakti livestock group.
Overcoming this problem Doni et al provided a solution by presenting material regarding assessment Body Condition Score (BCS) and reproductive management. According to Doni, one of the determining factors for pregnancy success is nutritional status which can be seen from its BCS.
“Assessment of the nutritional status of cattle with BCS is an applicable science that is easily applied in the field among smallholder breeders. So it is hoped that breeders can assess the nutritional status of cows through BCS to support an increase in pregnancy success rates.” he explained
Meanwhile, cattle reproduction management material was delivered by Ani Atul Arif. She said cattle reproductive management is a series of actions and strategies aimed at optimizing the reproductive success of cattle. This is because by carrying out reproductive management of cattle, it will increase the pregnancy rate, optimize birth intervals, and increase production cost efficiency. (tim/dta)
