Lecturers from the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) who are members of the PNBP program team conduct counseling to the community in Bantur Village, Malang Regency, Saturday (5/8/2023). They consist of Prof. Nurul Isnaini, Eko Nugroho, Ph.D., Aulia Puspita Anugra Yekti, M.Sc., Dr. Nanang Febrianto, and Tina Sri Purwanti, Ph.D.

The counseling participants were dairy farmers who are members of the Margo Mulyo dairy cooperative. The theme that was carried was “The Causes of Success and Failure of Artificial Insemination (AI) in the Margo Mulyo Dairy Cooperative.” Because based on the initial survey, farmers there experienced problems in implementing the AI process starting before the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, during the outbreak, until after the outbreak ended.

The material was delivered by Prof. Nurul Isnaini and Aulia Puspita, M.Sc. related to the importance of IB implementation procedures and the factors that influence its success and failure. According to Nurul, the factors that influence the success of AI include, (1) nutritional management: by providing balanced and proper nutrition it is very important to prepare cows so that their reproductive conditions are optimal, (2) selection of sows: choosing high quality and suitable cows with the aim of breeding to increase the success of AI, (3) proper and sterile insemination techniques to ensure quality sperm cells meet egg cells.

Meanwhile, the failure of AI is influenced by: (1) the health of the cows: when the cows are in poor health there is a lower chance of success for AI, (2) the timing of estrus: AI must be carried out when the cows are in estrus ( lust) so that the chances of success are higher, (3) selection of the right semen according to the characteristics of the female cow.

This material is a solutive explanation based on the experiences that have been faced by dairy farmers in Pujon and Ponorogo. The participants were very enthusiastic and hoped for further training, therefore the DM team plans to conduct training for inseminators on checking the quality of post-thawing spermatozoa and ultrasound.
