Implementation of Good Dairy Farming Practices Post FMD Outbreak

Foot and Mouth Disease (PMT) in ruminants, especially cattle and goats, attacked Indonesia in early April 2022 and was designated as an infectious disease outbreak in livestock by the Ministry of Agriculture as of May 7, 2022.The resulting impact is in the form of economic losses because it causes a decrease in meat and milk production, as well as inhibits the trade in livestock and animal products.

However, after the vaccination effort, the government has determined the transfer of FMD emergency status to certain conditions. This means, if someone is still infected with FMD, special handling will be carried out.

In order to prevent PMK coming back at once recovery the economic condition of the breeders, a Lecturer at Brawijaya University (UB) conducted counseling on the Subur Kenongo cattle group, Sumbersuko Village, Wagir District, Malang Regency, Monday (10/7/2023). The activity with the theme of biosecurity is covered in Serving Doctors (DM), the team involved is a collaboration of lecturers from various Faculties in UB. Among them Prof. Tri Eko Susilorini (Fapet), Prof. Suyadi (Fapet), Rini Dwi Wahyuni, M.Sc. (Fapet), drh. Widi Nugroho, PhD (FKH), and Latifah Hanum, SE., MSA., Ak (FIA).

They also work with undergraduate students who are doing Community Service (PKM). Namely Olga Qurunul Bahri Daniswara, Yuriva Fadillah Pranoto, Hanum Latifatuz Zuhro, Muhammad Fahrul Rachim, and Muhammad Fahrul Rachim.

DM team leader, Prof. Tri Eko explained Good Dairy Farming Practice (GDFP) is the management of dairy farms which includes all technical and economic activities in terms of daily maintenance. Such as reproduction, feeding methods and systems, cage sanitation, and disease prevention and treatment.

“We will conduct socialization and assistance from July to September 2023. The material presented is cage sanitation, good milking techniques, feed, and reproduction.” said Tri Eko

“Besides that, we will also introduce a superior activity from student PKM activities, namely planting Pakchong grass (a type of superior grass), which can grow well in various locations. So as to provide new knowledge for breeders.” she continued

In the future, he hopes that lecturers and students can work together to open wider opportunities to contribute to community activities, especially the livestock community.( tim/dta)
