Faculty of Animal Science Lecturer Assists in Making Fermented Feed Materials for Poultry

Lecturers of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) implement one of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely community service (pengmas). The team consisted of Prof. Osfar Sjofjan, Dr. Eko Widodo, Ahmad Khairul Umam, M.Sc., Zia Ul Rahman Fithron, M.B.A., and Danung Nur Adli, M.Sc. This is doing community service at the Bahrul Maghfiroh Islamic Boarding School. They socialize and accompany the manufacture of fermented feed ingredients for poultry.

Team leader, Prof. Osfar said feed quality and containing high nutrition in terms of price is relatively expensive. Therefore, alternative feed innovations are needed which are relatively cheap, easy to obtain, and have sufficient nutritional value. Materials from agricultural waste such as sago pulp, bran, banana peels, avocado fruit waste, cassava waste, durian fruit waste, palm kernel cake, cocoa fruit skin, and coffee fruit skin can be utilized and processed into feed that is able to meet the nutritional needs of poultry.

Simulation of making fermented feed ingredients uses the coconut dregs provided by Danung. According to him, fermentation can be carried out for 2-3 days depending on the feed ingredients, media, and inoculant used.

This activity received support from the former Rector of UB. Prof. M. Bisri said that community service held at Islamic boarding schools would have a positive impact on students. Apart from providing knowledge of feed ingredients, on the other hand it will encourage the birth of entrepreneurs from graduates of Islamic boarding schools.

“The orientation of the santri should no longer be looking for work, but creating job opportunities, spreading the widest possible benefits for the people.” Bisri said (dan/dta)
