Lecturer of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Halu Oleo (UHO) Kendari, as well as a student of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) Doctoral Program in Animal Science, Ir. Syam Rahadi, S.Pt., MPMM, IPM received a doctorate (Dr.) after taking the final open dissertation exam, Friday (15/7/2022).

He carried out research entitled “Genetic Potential, Population Dynamics, and Development Strategies of Kacang Goats in Southeast Sulawesi Islands”. Southeast Sulawesi is one of the distribution areas for goats in Indonesia with a population of 195,575 heads, which is dominated by kacang goats.

However, the pattern of raising goats there, in general, is still carried out traditionally with limited breeder skills, only utilizing available livestock genetic resources, not paying attention to good seed standards, and goats being released freely in rice fields, fields, and markets.

This results in an increase in the coefficient of inbreeding, which causes a decrease in birth weight, weaning weight, overall growth in milk production, fat content, and milk protein.

“Based on typology, the Southeast Sulawesi region is an archipelago with an expanse of two hilly topography, an altitude between 100-500 above sea level. So there is great potential for the development of peanut goats,” said Syam

“Therefore, an effective and sustainable development strategy and program for breeding peanuts is needed.” continued

The research, which was promoted by Prof. VM Ani Nurgiartiningsih, Prof. Trinil Susilawati, and Prof. Gatot Ciptadi studied phenotype and morphometric characteristics, productivity, and reproducibility, population dynamics, and breeder characteristics.

From the results of the study, several main priorities were obtained as a strategy for developing kacang goats in the Southeast Sulawesi Islands. Among other things, increasing the human resources of breeders through training in goat farming business, developing superior peanut goat breeding centers, forming associations/groups of breeders, establishing and optimizing Animal Health Centers (Puskeswan), and utilizing appropriate technology in goat cultivation.

Meanwhile, breeding efforts can be carried out by strengthening government policies, formulating breeding objectives, strengthening markets, strengthening infrastructure, developing human resources, evaluating livestock genetic quality, implementing selection and mating systems, strengthening breeder capital, and applying appropriate technology.
