Head of the East Java Livestock Service, Ir. Indyah Aryani, MM and the team visited the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB), Friday (4/2/2022). The visit was to discuss the Madura cattle development strategy and the plan to patent the pote goat as a unique family.
The Dean of UB Faculty of Animal Science, Prof. Suyadi said Madura cattle are one of the high-value germplasm for the East Java region. Because Madura cattle have advantages, they are easy to maintain with simple feed, easy to adapt to the environment, and able to adapt to low quality feed. Although surviving under the stress of hot weather, Madura cattle are still able to grow and reproduce normally, and are resistant to tropical parasitic diseases.
“This is an extraordinary point that has great potential if the development of Madura cattle is carried out.” said the Dean of Fapet during the two periods.
In general, Madura cattle function as beef cattle or beef producing cattle. Meanwhile, on the island of Madura itself, apart from being a beef cattle native to Indonesia, it is also a cultural destination. Such as the bull race (cattle race) for bulls, beauty cows (sonok) for female cows, and decorative cows (tajek) for small cows.

The reason is that the Madurese culture is inherent if you have good quality Madura cattle in terms of culture, it can increase the selling value and become a source of pride.
“Therefore, the Madura cattle must be preserved and developed, to protect its original genetics. Because when it is crossed with other nations, the values are already different. So that its function will only be beef cattle.” explained Prof. Suyadi, an expert on livestock reproduction.
He added that the way to preserve the Madura cattle is to open public perception by providing education about the uniqueness, value, and potential opportunities for developing Madura cattle. As well as providing value awards for good seeds, males, and females through national events.
The next discussion is about the pote goat that developed in Arosbaya District, Bangkalan Regency, Madura. The goat population of 3000 heads is able to adapt in the lowlands and produces milk between 700 ml – 800 ml per day per head. Whereas most of the dairy goats live in the highlands with cool air.

This condition is assessed by Prof. Suyadi is unique as well as an extraordinary opportunity to be developed into a lowland dairy goat. However, research is needed to trace the initial crosses of goats so that the original genetics are found.
“Physically, this pote goat appears to be the result of a cross from several goat breeds. Such as sanen goats (imported), senduro goats, ettawah hybrid goats, and peanut goats.” clear
“Therefore, we academics need to search for the initial cross and the initial purpose of the cross. And see the power of reproductive ability and study its properties. If the genetic characteristics are known and understood, then we will apply for a patent for the formation of a new family for this pote goat through the Ministry of Agriculture.” continued (suyadi/dta)
