Students of Fapet UB and Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University Join Summer Course Program

To produce internationally competent graduates, the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) held Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) with the Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University (SU) Nagano, Japan. COIL is a student exchange program packaged in the form of a summer course

The program summer course starts on August 11, 2021, until September 10, 2021, and is attended by 39 participants. It consists of 28 students of the Undergraduate Study Program of Fapet UB and 11 students of the Undergraduate Program of the Faculty of Agriculture SU.

There are two rounds in the program timeline on food culture and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDGs are goals set by the United Nations as the world’s development plan for the safety of humans and the earth. These include eradicating poverty and hunger, improving health and education, building more sustainable cities, tackling climate change, and protecting forests and oceans.

On food culture, participants will take turns presenting about local food, which includes history, culture, recipes, presentation, marketing, and its diversity in the domestic market.

As for the discussion of SDGs, participants from the two faculties will be combined into several groups. Then each group presented the progress, achievements, and importance of three of the 17 goals in their respective countries (Japan and Indonesia).

The Head of International Relations Office (IRO) of Fapet UB, Prof. VM Ani Nurgiartiningsih explained some of the program’s outcomes, including (1) introducing and providing insight into cross-border cultures so that students become individuals who are more open to accepting differences. (2) Participants have the awareness to achieve 17 SDGs in their respective countries. (3) Strengthening inter-institutional relations to be able to implement other cooperation programs. (4) International standard institutional recognition.

The assessment mechanism is sourced from activity reports compiled by participants and collected at the end of the program. Participants will then be given an activity certificate.

“This program will be recognized by two SKS (courses free form) for participants from Fapet UB so that COIL can support the implementation of the Merdeka Learning program at Merdeka Campus,” explained Ani (dta)
