Commemorating Nusantara Milk Day (HSN), which is set on June 1, the Student Family Executive (EKM) of the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya Kediri, held a talk show via zoom meeting, Sunday (6/6/221).
Carrying the theme “Together with Milk Create Healthy and Smart Entrepreneurs,” the event invited several dairy experts. Among them, Prof. Dr. Ir. Puguh Surjowardojo, MP (Vice Director of PSDKU Universitas Brawijaya Kediri, Lecturer of Fapet UB, Author of Various Dairy Cattle Books), Ir. Sulistyanto, MM. (Head of KPSP Setia Kawan, Nongkojajar, Pasuruan, and Chairman of the Indonesian Dairy Cooperative Association), and Rifa’i, S.Pt., M.Pt (Lecturer of Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Kahuripan Kediri and CO-Founder of Teramaggo Farm).
The head of EKM, Rafif expressed his hope that the holding of this talk show could awaken students to become creative dairy entrepreneurs. Because in addition to having excellent nutrition for the body, milk can also be processed into various kinds of snacks and drinks. Such as yogurt, kefir, cheese, curd, dali, sweetened condensed milk, milk powder, fried milk, milk sticks, and so on.
Prof. Puguh said, simply milk contains water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins. While the natural components of milk consist of 87.5% water; 12.5% solid; 3.5% fat; 9% solid non-fat; 3.3% protein; 2.8% casein; 0.5% whey protein/albumin; 4.6% lactose; 0.8% minerals, 0.3% miscellaneous, organic acids and vitamins.
“Milk is nature’s most perfect food for growth, development, and cell recovery for both humans and livestock,” explained Puguh.
Next, he conveyed tips on milk storage, namely storing it closed at a temperature of 4-5 degrees Celsius, checking the expiration date of milk, consuming liquid milk in open packages on the same day, and making sure not to drink milk that has been opened for more than five days.
However, according to Ir. Sulistiyanto, milk business opportunities in Indonesia have not developed because 78% of fresh milk is still imported. This is due to lack of knowledge of livestock management, lack of forage feed and concentrate supplies, procurement of superior seeds, the scale of ownership, application of technological innovations in cages, human resource capabilities of breeders/staff, marketing management, regeneration of breeders/staff, the role of the government, and low public consumption will milk.
“We as livestock actors, let’s work together to overcome these obstacles so that we can realize national milk security and minimize milk imports,” he explained (dta)
