Lecturers of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry Universitas Brawijaya (Fapet UB) present the results of field research on the implementation of Artificial Insemination (IB) using sexing semen for independent breeding in Pujon District, Tuesday (10/5/2022). They consist of Prof. Trinil Susilawati, Aulia Puspita Anugra Yekti, M.Sc., Rizki Prafitri, Ph.D., and Dr. Nanang Febrianto.
Prof. Trinil said the aim of the research was to increase the number of female dairy cows (calf) that could be used as a replacement for sires. So that later in the Pujon area there is no need to import cow breeds.
This activity is the role of livestock lecturers to solve problems in the community in order to increase population, genetic quality, and national milk production.
“In 2021, we have conducted AI using sexing and non-sexing semen techniques to 300 cows. Then in 2022, AI will be given back to 275 FH cattle.” explained Trinil
In general, AI is carried out on livestock using two methods, namely IB with sexing semen and IB with non-sexing semen. The sexing technique is to separate X and Y spermatozoa, so they can produce children according to the desired sex. While for non-sexing, before the IB process, the spermatozoa are given diluent and then stored frozen, the offspring obtained have a 50:50 chance between males and females.
“We hope that in 2022, the success rate of IB at the conception rate is more than 60%. This means that the pregnancy rate is better than last year and produces the number of female calves.” he said
Pregnancy failure was mostly caused by the lack of precise timing of the IB. So it is necessary to increase the role of breeders in detecting lust. (nien / dta)
