The Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Brawijaya (UB), under the guidance of Dr. Ir. Eko Widodo, MSc., M.Agr.Sc. (Vice Dean III), conducted a Study Excursion to Bali from November 13–16, 2024. The activity commenced with a visit to the Denpasar Center for Superior Livestock Breeding and Forage Crops (BPTU-HPT Denpasar).
Participants were welcomed by the BPTU-HPT Denpasar team in the center’s auditorium. During the visit, they received presentations on breeding management and performance testing for Bali cattle, including explanations about grazing systems in paddocks.
According to Danung Nur Adli, SPt., MSc., MPt., the accompanying lecturer, students had the opportunity to observe and directly engage with Bali cattle breeding and maintenance systems. They also compared the effectiveness of natural mating systems with artificial insemination. The maintenance system at BPTU-HPT involves releasing livestock into paddocks with a predetermined male-to-female ratio.
The next visit was to the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Udayana University, Bali. The group was warmly received by Dr. Ir. Nyoman Sumerta Miwada, SPt., MP., Vice Dean III. During this visit, Udayana University provided participants the opportunity to observe a Modern Closed House for broiler chickens, managed in collaboration with PT. Charoen Pokphand.
According to Daffa, Vice President of BEM Fapet UB, this activity had a positive impact by strengthening ties between BEM Fapet UB and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Udayana University while broadening insights into livestock conditions outside Java. “This activity was an invaluable experience, particularly in enhancing practical field perspectives,” said Daffa, a final-year student.
On the following day, participants visited a pie milk factory called “Cening Bagus” to learn about the pie milk production process. According to the Operations Manager, the pie-making process is relatively simple and offers a creative solution for processing surplus milk. “Instead of wasting unused milk, it’s better to process it into value-added products like pie milk,” said the Operations Manager. tim/mtn
